Killer Bee

Had a little bit of a bee incident yesterday.

Carter, Nolen, Ant Jennette and I were hanging outside on the front driveway. Innocently enough, but a few bees decided to join us.
It was nap time anyway, so we decided to haul the kids inside. Just as we're walking away a large bee landed on the inside part of Carter's ear - needless to say, causing a great deal of panic in my small son.

Ant Jennette waved it away and I rushed the boys inside, not sure if Carter had been stung or not. ("bee hurt my ear! bee hurt my ear!")

I sat Nolen down on the floor and pulled Carter down on my lap so I could check out his ear. Dad was stung this summer, so he's familiar with the pain. Upon closer inspection though, Carter's ear was fine. He was only crying from the shock of a large buzzing insect trying to get into his head. I also noticed that we had missed a little bit of breakfast that had found it's way to his ear - a smear of blueberry from Mom's blueberry pancakes. Which might explain why a bee would want to land there.

During this whole episode, Nolen is sitting there looking at his brother with great concern. Could just see him trying to figure out why his favorite person in the whole world was crying so much. Eventually he toppled himself over, crawled over (army-style), and climbed up into Carter's lap. He lay his little head onto Carter's shoulder, to comfort him. Carter's crying slowed down as he put his arm around his little brother and said "tank you nolen". A few more little sniffs while they shared a hug, and the Killer Bee was forgotten.

Birthday Videos

Here is some video from Carter's Birthday *June 19*. Don't you remember? He was born in the summer. Not the winter of 2004, just before a huge ice storm, and the Tsunami in Asia?

This first video we watched this morning just before linking it to youtube.com. Notice, you can't see Papa in the video at all. As soon as he started talking in the video, Carter said, "Papa! Where'd my Papa go?" Carter hasn't seen Papa since June and only sees him every few months.

I always have to remind myself what a good memory he has now at this age!

Carter's JUNE Birthday

We celebrated Carter's new birthday-his 2 1/2 year birthday June 19. A full 6 months after his 2nd birthday. For you non-believers out there, we have always said we would change Carter's birthday to the summer. This year was the first year of that change. From this point on his birthday will occur in June. "You can't do that!?" I can hear leagues of you saying from the haze of ether...why yes we can. We are omnipotent. We can do anything. We are sick with power. Do not fall under our wrath.

Carter's Maisy Cake-which I designed and drew...thank you VERY much. That there is Maisy and her fire engine. With tools. Which is why the cake has tools (screw driver, saw and a hamma) I am mad talented. My second calling is cake decorating.

If a tree falls in Bloomington, and no one sees it fall...

As you may know we had a very large, very loud storm here On Friday night, and also Saturday night as well. Friday was a doosey-and Carter could not stop talking about the thunder and lighting and the rain the entire next day. When they say toddlers perseverate, they are not kidding. Just when I thought he was on to other topics, "Rain outfide? I hear thunder with my ears?" etc.

Usually I sleep through stuff like thunderstorms. I don't know if this year with Nolen has ruined my ability to sleep as soundly - although I doubt it, Matt still can't wake me up when I fall asleep downstairs in front of the TV - but as soon as the rain started I was awake. Matt sat straight up after one unbelievably loud clap of thunder that sounded like it was right outside our window. I was waiting for the air raid sirens to go off. The kids slept through it!

It turns out we were the lucky ones. Many people in Eden Prairie were out of power at least for the morning. ...does it still make a noise?

Uncle Corey and Auntie Kate just got power restored today. They also had a lot of damage to their property. The fence was taken down by debris. However, the biggest coolest thing of all is the tree that fell (pictured here). Luckily it fell and missed their house. Kate and Corey had their cute little baby nephew, Avery sleeping in the room the tree would have crashed down on to. Poor baby.

"Hello? Is anyone there?..."

We all spend a lot of time on the phone in this house. The phone is very important, and why wouldn't it be? Matt and I have cell phones, house phones, and the kids have two toy cell phones of their own. The most prized toy, is always the real phone. When we are on the phone our attention is diverted. This can be to Carter and Nolen's benefit, but often it is to their increasing anxiety and frustration in our lack of attention. I, sadly, have become that person who carries on a running conversation with the person on the phone, her children, and herself.

Has this behaviour been rubbing off? I think so.

Example? Recently, Carter has been having short conversations with his Kitty. Remember the cat costume from last October? It spends much of its days being donned by a toddler, or in a "puddle-like state" hiding under a bed, in a closet, or sleeping under a foam chair. However, when not engaged in these thrilling activities, he finds time from his busy schedule to call Carter. The conversations typically run like this:

"Hello"
"hmmm, mmmhhhmm, mhmmmmm,"
"Hi Kit-ty! Hi, Hi."
"What doing Kitty-cat? What doing?"
Matt: "What is the Kitty doing?
Carter: Kit-ty eat noon-ls!
"Bye Kit-ty."

There is much nodding of the head and a look that says "I am committing all of my attention to this conversation".

Nolen, not wanting to be outdone, has picked up his own phone habits:

Georg!

Nolen = Bill the Cat

So many milestones to report.

BUT. I a'int gonna.

Nope. That's the kind of mom I am. The kind that calls her oldest son Toonces (aka: Toonces the Driving Cat link here).

Nolen, lately, has been reminding me of someone I remember, and loved so much from my past. I just could not put my finger on it.

Then last night it hit me:

Bill the Cat! Famous for so many things. "ACK!" Blowing raspberries. All things Nolen does. I don't know, you decide for yourself. This grrrl has just found a new nickname.
